Vocabulary - less common and idiomatic expressions for IELTS, CAE, CPE (TOEFL)

  1. Do any of your peers commute an incredibly long way to and from school / work?
  2. What activities do people do to kill the time when traveling? Which activities fritter away the time, and which utilize the time?
  3. In rush hour, are the buses and underground carriages jam-packed with /  packed with / or just reasonably full of people?
  4. Have you ever been elbowed out of the way when trying to enter a train or bus?
  5. Are conditions on public transport up to scratch or do they leave a lot to be desired? If the latter is the case, what needs improving, and how feasible would it be for the government to take measures to better the situation?
  6. As far as public transport is concerned, has the government rolled out any new technology recently?
  7. Are there designated buslanes in your city? If there aren't, do you wish there were, or if there are, do you wish there were more or less?
  8. How reliable are trains when it comes to arriving on time? - highly, reasonably, sufficiently, not terribly reliable?
  9. What concessions does your government provide for the elderly / children / anyone else?
  10. Do travel passes provide significantly better value for money?
  11. Do you know anyone who uses public transport due to the fact that owning a car is beyond their means?
